The Dragon Story I Wrote When I Was 8

So, there’s this Instagram reel I posted a bit ago that’s been getting a bit of traction recently.

I showed you guys a funny little snippet of this dragon story I found (which I wrote when I was about 8 years old), and you all seemed to want more of it. So—because y’all are the best—I’m here to deliver.

I’m giving you full access to the entire thing.

It’s so funny guys. You’re gonna lose it.

Never Delete Your Writing

I made the video as a joke, and I still think that screenshot I shared was hilarious (“the Beating Chamber” really made me lose it).

However, I do think there’s a good lesson to be learned here. You should never delete your writing.

8 year old me probably thought this was really good. But I lost interest and moved onto another story, and then that happened again, and so it goes.

I remember rediscovering it later, probably when I was around 12 or so. I thought it was so embarrassing and wanted to wipe it off the face of the earth forever. But for some reason, I couldn’t bring myself to do it, so I uploaded it to my Google Drive instead.

And now, at age 20, I found it again—and I think it’s the funniest thing ever.

It’s different finding something like that 12 years later as opposed to 4. Although I was a completely different person at age 12, and an improved writer, it was still recent enough for me to have that embarrassment about it.

But as an adult, I now have the maturity and perspective to not hold an 8 year old to the same standards that I hold myself to. So I can just get a good laugh from it all and allow myself to be entertained by it.

Anyway, I deleted a lot of the stories I wrote back when I was 7-9 years old, and I wish I hadn’t. Because I know there were some even stranger ones that I would really love to read now.

And, if I’d deleted that random playing card tattoo idea I had when I was 12 and gave up on, I would never have discovered it in my Google Drive later, and Lone Player wouldn’t exist.

So yeah. Keep your writing. All of it. Hoard it, because you might need it again someday—whether you’re writing a YA dystopian trilogy based on a few odd ideas you had when you were 12, or you just need a good laugh.
